Who are Robel and Mimi? How did Robel discover Alan Watt’s work? An interesting conversation that covers Communist revolution in Ethiopia, the Orthodox Christian religion that played a role in protecting Ethiopia from Westerners for a thousand years, and how they both ended up in the U.S.
This morning, I received an email from Robel that sheds a bit more light on a point in the conversation where I asked him about the timeline of the expulsion of Westerners from Ethiopia. In discussing foreign influence in the country, Robel mentioned the ‘last king’ of Ethiopia (Haile Selassie) who was made emperor had spent five years in Great Britain. Robel suggested that might mean that Selassie was aware of the role that he and Ethiopia played in the longer range plans of a revolutionary agenda. I’m sharing his email and the images that Robel included to illustrate it.

For your question regarding when Ethiopia allowed Western influence to creep back in:
Edward Gibbon finishes his section on Ethiopia like this: “‘that the sheep of Ethiopia were now delivered from the hyaenas of the West;’ and the gates of that solitary realm were for ever shut against the arts, the science, and the fanaticism of Europe.” This period appears to be around the year 1633. He wrote this piece in 1788 so over 150 years had passed since the event which Ethiopians decided to end their relationship with the West.
Relations existed between the political elite of Ethiopia and the West in a limited manner after that. If we look at the history of the major national flags of Ethiopia, it weaves an interesting storyline. As a student of symbolism, I find it very fascinating.
Ethiopia was for the most part the northern highland regions which consist of modern day Amhara, Tigray and parts of Eritrea (Italy colonized and it is now annexed), which all 3 were Orthodox Christian. However, late 1800s, Menelik II wanted expansion so he commissioned for purchase of European weapons, technology, military strategy, trade and diplomatic recognition. He conquered independent regions in the south which included Oromo (the current ruling party) and parts of Somalia. Oromos were pagan/Muslim majority and Somalia is Muslim. These were regions that Ethiopians had major wars with previously to keep them out.
First national standardized flag is this one below. The letter you see in the middle is the first letter of the emperor Menelik II. This flag was standardized a year after Menelik defeated Italy (using weapons they sold to him a couple of years back...hmmm). This set the stage for nationalism/patriotism and pride under the flag for defeating a Western power. He is now a national hero.
1897-1913
Next flag was under Haile Selassie. The crowned lion represented ‘the conquering line of Judah,’ which also carried a staff with a cross. This to me represents the union of church and monarchy under the new standardized flag. He was not just a king but referred to as King of Kings and Emperor of Ethiopia. Power was consolidated to the monarchy over the different ethnicities and peoples. He was paraded around the world as a symbol of Pan Africanism and is considered a god by Jamaicans who subscribe to the Rastafarian movement. 1913-1975

After periods of famine in northern regions, he was publicly deposed and the socialist regime under the guise of progress took power. The base flag stayed the same but they replaced the lion of Judah with a rising sun. The revolution has removed the old imperial order; the Ethiopian people, especially the peasants, are being awakened and prepared to build a new socialist society. The plow over the rising sun is therefore a particularly important image, it links material transformation (cultivating the land) with political transformation (cultivating consciousness). The government presented itself as cultivating the minds of the people just as farmers cultivate the land. This period is also includes when the internationally recognized famine took place.
1975-1987
The socialist regime then formed to the “People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.” The new flag represented the transition from a military socialist regime into a formal one party Marxist-Leninist state. We see in the emblem the usual suspects. Obelisk (this style is one from Ethiopia’s ancient history), wreath, rising sun, and the gear, all communicating the new regime’s vision that the revolution had moved from destroying the old imperial order into building a socialist state. It’s an attempt to visually move Ethiopia from a Solomonic Christian empire into a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary republic (or back to how it was prior to Christianity). The overall meaning: The ancient Ethiopian civilization, built by the labor of its people, has entered a new socialist era guided by revolutionary principles.
1987-1991
Mengistu Haile Mariam is the leader of the socialist party and is convicted of genocide as his gruesome crimes were beyond description. He played his role in destabilizing the people of the land and since 1991, as his reward he lives in exile in Zimbabwe like a king where he spent most of his time as a high ranking advisor/consultant for the government of Zimbabwe specifically advising them in their intelligence agency for interrogation tactics and security.
His replacement, led by Western educated and resourced Marxist group from an ethnic group in the north that has a population of 5 million to rule over the rest of 90 million people. This group was selected from Tigray region and people. The introduced the highly divisive ethnic federation, where one identified by what region/ethnic background he/she belonged to.
And the current flag, a pentagram... a geometric formula designed to bind the spiritual sovereignty of the nation within a protected, synthetic heavenly sphere, shielding it from external, spiritual forces. This is a declaration that Ethiopia is now fully controlled and under the direction of the mystery schools (or as Alan would put it best, ‘Experts’ and modern ‘priests’).
The current prime minister, rose to power as a messiah. His name, Abiy Ahmed Ali, but says he is a Pentecostal Christian (reminds me of Barack Hussein Obama lol). He is very charismatic and has continued the same agenda. He also won the Nobel Peace without doing anything. Now, he has put his republican guards in place, he is showing his true colors and the people are waking up but it’s too late.
